How long has it been?
by MattWorley on Dec.01, 2011, under Uncategorized
Well It’s been a long time since I’ve updated my blog. So for all the cord cutters, its been about a year now since I have cut the cord on cable/DirecTV, and I’ve not looked back. It’s been fantastic and saved me money more importantly. At work we have been working on videos for a big pharmaceutical company for one of their sales meetings. We’ve had puppets made that look like some of the managers. We recorded the managers lines from the scripts and It’s been my job to animate the puppets. Since I am the only one in the office who has performance experience. It takes me back to my entertaining days. Though it’s not really been that long. I’ve got so many things I want to do right now. It’s hard to find the time to make them all happen, maybe it’s time to narrow my field.
6 Months Later (Cutting the Cord)

It’s been a whole half year since my household cut the cord. We have received several calls from DirecTV and Time Warner asking if I would like a TV bundle, I literally laugh at them. They ask what I am paying and I say, “well $8 for Hulu, $14 for Netflix, and nothing for my antenna.” Then I ask if they can beat that price. The answer is of course, no. I’ve rented a couple movies from Amazon which didn’t cost really anything with the promotions I’ve opted into.
Ok my first concern was, where am I going to get children’s programming for my son? Not long after we started it all, it was like I struck gold: Amazon had “Sesame Street” episodes, then Netflix got more episodes, plus “Yo Gabba Gabba!”, and tons of other PBS stuff.
Next I was worried about missing current shows, Hulu Plus is still catching up on this one, but it’s also pretty easy to catch a show on when it first airs via the antenna.
We have since saved some $360, give or take, since we cut the cord. The Roku has more then payed for it self, along with the subscriptions.
Over all the experience has been great, no issues. But as I have said before, it’s not for everybody just yet.
All is quite…

Roku Android App Follow up
by MattWorley on Mar.08, 2011, under Android, Cord Cutting, Technology
Ahh, things keep getting better in the world of cord cutting! The Roku Remote App was updated today and has new a cool new feature. Ladies and Gentleman please welcome the Channel List!
Yeah it’s awesome, and you know it. No more scrolling from side to side trying to figure out which is the shortest route to your favorite channel, now it’s all there with the push of a button. For all you Android phone Roku using folks this is a bright day for you! The app is still only $.99 well worth it for more functionality then your standard Roku remote.
Wont be surprised if one day Roku buys up this guys work and add’s it to their catalog. Two thumbs up to Gregg Reno.

Mobile TV?
by MattWorley on Mar.07, 2011, under Android, Cord Cutting, Technology
Cord free going on our second month and all is good, I’ve been re-published on Gigaom and I’ll be contributing to NewTVRevolution in the near future too.
I’ve been testing out all kinds of ways to get media from Roku to Laptop now I’m testing things out on my phone. Unfortunately Netflix and Hulu are not supporting a player on the Android platform. I’ve used the TV.com app to watch a couple shows, the selection is not super and for most shows you must be on a Wifi connection. There are not many TV apps, but for music there are several options. Pandora is by far one of my favorite, I’ve spent a lot of time fine tuning my channels so it pretty much plays just stuff I know and like. Last.fm has a decent music app as well as Rdio.com which lets you build your own playlists. The cool thing about Rdio.com is you can sync your iTunes with Rdio and they will add your tracks.
With hopes there will be more apps in the future to bring video content to your mobile phone.

Update
by MattWorley on Feb.22, 2011, under Uncategorized
Most of the motion for MatthewWorley.com has moved over to my LDS blog at MormonCast.org. In addition, I’ve been working on a short story, and we recently submitted Mouthbreathers to the LA Webfest. It’s still a work in progress and we plan on updating the episodes with a few more things, we just had to get them out to the festival before the deadline.
Thats about it for right now.
